The squiggly road to joy
So what was the journey from the Institute of Taxation to working as a coach with people at a lifechanging crossroads in their life?
At University I loved studying anything related to shaping the physical landscapes I loved hiking through. On graduating I briefly considered training to teach Geography. Instead I trained for Institute of Taxation exams. Eventually I passed the exams and we moved south soon after we married. I briefly worked in a small accountancy firm but when I got pregnant and my employer couldn’t justify my desk and PC for a part timer I left. There was no sadness, only relief.
I stayed at home bringing up our children . I got involved with our church youth group which I loved, and then a local Christian Schoolswork charity offering support to young people in classes and small groups. I undertook some mentoring and studied for a certificate in mentoring to improve my skills. This was the start of my love of supporting people to move forward. Eventually when our youngest daughter changed schools for years 10-13 I got a job in a local school mainly supporting students 1:1. I learnt lots and grew in confidence. After a couple of years I was ready for a change. I got a job supporting adults into education, training and employment. Over time I honed my skills as I worked with learners gaining understanding in how to help them to grow confidence and move out of their comfort zones. It was exciting to watch adults gain hope and inspiration and take steps towards a better future. Along the way I have had challenges in my mindset as I was never naturally optimistic, my wellbeing; I have had seasons of darkness and my confidence; redundancy felt like rejection that said I was not worth keeping. I have learnt to practise better self care, especially in seasons of loss and change and to step out of my comfort zones, feeling the fear and doing it anyway and not believing the False Evidence which Appeared Real (FEAR) ;whilst believing in a better future and daring to dream of more.
